CONSEQUENCE(S) OF
DEVELOPMENTAL ADJUSTMENTS
Some months ago, my younger brother informed me about a
University that raised the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) levels for
degrees to be awarded.
Walking in my mind, thoughts about the facts that it is an
evidence of developmental adjustment, I feel to some extent it is ethically
justifiable.
However, the main point of discourse today is the effect the
decision will have on graduates. Would the adjustment affect graduates of that
University?
Most conventional tertiary institutions (especially
Universities) in Nigeria use a 5-point CGPA with 4.5 as the commencement bar
for First class degree.
If the bar is readjusted to 4.8, does it mean that graduates
with 4.7 will be referred to as having degrees lower than First class?
The responses seem obvious anyway, but the main point I am stressing
today is the fact that a developmental readjustment is only relevant when it is
alive.
In Law, I am aware that if an offence escapes a declaration,
then it is free*
Strive as much as possible to meet the mark when it is still
within your reach rather than expect a developmental adjustment.
